Fix Power Calibration Error

Try using a cotton swab to fix the power calibration error with your CD-DVD unit

It's quite a common issue with notebooks: you can't burn any CD-R or DVD-R, after a while you bought it.

The problem occurs with several error messages using burning software applications. First of all Roxio says:

Sense: 03 ASC: 73 ASCQ: 03 (Command 2A)

You can't understand what hell it means, but using another software, ImgBurn, I had a chance to read something less criptic:

Failed so send Cue Sheet
Reason: Power Calibration Area Error

The burning software is unable to determine the Optimum Power Calibration rate (a small pre-burn test to determine optimal laser power for writing), resulting a disk burn failure.

On the web there is plenty of suggestions how to fix it. The first tip is updating the burning software with the latest patch.

Another tip is trying to change CD or DVD support brand, due to the low quality of anonymous media supports.

Another dramatic tip is trying to lower the burning speed abandoning the maximum possible.

Megaleecher suggests to disable the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM service" available in the services of the Administrative Tools in Windows.

I didn't find anybody on the net that tells my tip:

take a cotton swab for ears and try to remover the thin dust strate that could cover the laser optics of your CD-DVD-BD unit.

My suggestion works greatly: the cotton swab got lightly gray of dust, which was enough to inhibit any calibration operation, although it wasn't an issue for media reading.
